In some songs the additional depth and range allow the original rock opera to realize its full glory. (In some versions of the saga, the father kills the lover. Recreated and expanded to fit an orchestra's multitude of instruments and a formal choir's multitude of voices, Tommy's energy and rockosity is obscured and quashed, made pretentious and even silly. Tommy was released in the UK on by Track Records (Track 613013/4) with a subsequent double CD (Polydor 800 077-2), followed by a remixed single CD (Polydor 531 043-2) in 1996 and finally a Deluxe Edition two-CD set SACD hybrid (Polydor 9861011) in 2004. Things take a dark turn midway through the tune when her husband returns home, finds her in bed with a new man and proceeds to murder him while their son Tommy looks on.
He’s singing not from the perspective of an anxious planet eager to move beyond the nightmare of a pandemic - even though the Spanish-flu pandemic finally ended in 1920 after infecting 500 million people - but from the perspective of a young mother who’s just getting her life back together after her husband disappeared in World War I. On “1921,” from the Who’s rock opera Tommy, Roger Daltrey repeatedly sings, “I’ve got a feeling ’21/Is going to be a good year/Especially if you and me/See it in together.” That sentiment may sound familiar to Who fans. With a new presidential administration gearing up to take office shortly after the new year and two vaccines just starting to make their way across the country, many people are looking ahead to ’21 and hoping that it’s going to be a good year.
